8.You are going to read the information about making a presentation.

While reading answer the questions. This will help you  to understand how to make a presentation using your own experience and observations. Presentation is a kind of oral performance. The point of any presentation is to make an audience feel interest about what you are speaking and share your point of view.

·                   Give examples of the most successful presentations. Who made them?

·                   In what spheres of social life is it used?

ABCs of a presentation

Introduction

Introduction gives  the listener an idea of what to expect and acts as a «hook» to grab attention.

You may start with «Hello. My name is … .

The topic of my presentation is …  ».

Main part

Main part supports the «controlling» idea of your presentation.  Divide your conception into arguments and build the arguments according to the following structure:

What is the main idea of the paragraph?

What information will be used to support the main idea?

What does the information mean? Give an explanation?

Conclusion

The point of conclusion is to summarize what was said to support the aim of the presentation and give the listener a sense of completeness.

You may finish with «In conclusion I would like to say …  / draw your attention to «

To provoke interest in a listener most of the speakers use special techniques.

Think of people who are the best at it and say what techniques they use.

Now read the description of some rhetorical devices and give examples of their use.

Music: Captures attention – helps recall.

Patriotism: Suggests that purchasing this product show your love for country.

Plain Folks: Suggest that the product is a practical product for ordinary people.

Snob Appeal: The use of the product makes the customer a part of an elite group.

Bribery: Gives a desirable «extra something» – free fries, free soda, etc.

Bandwagon: Exploits the desire to be part of a group or crowd.

Transfer: Words & ideas with positive connotations are used to suggest that the positive qualities should be applied to the product; the product takes on certain properties.

Character Hook: Hero, villain, or victim embodies a key attribute of a brand.

Emotional Appeal: Plays upon fear or sentiment of consumer rather than logical decision. Cute animals, babies, hands on (physical touch between a loving parent and a child).

Wit & Humor: Diverts attention – you don’t even think about the product.

Card Stacking: Puts all the «cards» in favor of the product; it makes the other «guy» look pathetic – over exaggerates.

Testimonial: Uses word of an expert or a famous person to promote a particular idea or product. The consumer identifies with the person.

Now make your own presentation on a profession of a PR manager.

9. You are going to read the text and make up a dispute afterwards.

We all want a dream job. Just like finding that one great love, it’s a goal that virtually everyone has. After all, over the course of our lifetimes, we’ll work some 90 000 hours–and that’s a lot of time to waste on something you’re not passionate about.

While identifying the ideal career is not a walk in the park, I’m here to tell you it’s also not a fantasy.

·                   Do you agree? What steps are essential to make to find your dream job?

·                   What character traits are necessary (desirable, harmful) for PR manager? Why? Support your ideas with arguments.

10. Discuss in pairs such an opinion:

«Resume is a self-promotional document that presents you in the best possible light, for the purpose of getting invited to a job interview»

·                    Do you agree?

·                    Can a person exaggerate to get a job? If yes, then in what degree?
