1. Образование:

2.Употребление:

Для выражения длительного действия, которое совершалось в определенный момент в прошлом.

Этот момент обозначается:

обстоятельствами времени:e.g. at 5 o’clock, at midnight, at the moment etc.

E.g. They were playing tennis at 3 o’clock.

другими прошедшими действиями, выраженными в Past Simple

E.g. He was cooking lunch when his mother came home from work.

Когда два длительных действия совершались одновременно, параллельно

E.g. While I was washing up my sister was doing her homework.

При необходимости подчеркнуть действие как процесс, Past Progressive употребляется с такими обстоятельствами как  all day long (весь день), the whole evening (весь вечер), from 3 to 6, all the time (все время).
